young girls who suffer from hair loss due to cancer

treatments or alopecia. Also, for young girls who are having

trouble coping with their mother's hair loss from chemo. My

daughter had some difficulty accepting me going from a

long haired blond to a bald woman. Accessories such as

scarves and hats could be included. This would be a great

coping mechanism for you girls dealing with hair loss

themselves or a loved one. I would love to see proceeds go

to childhood cancer research and treatment. Let's get

Yes, I shaved my head....

I had my second R-CVP chemo treatment today. My husband always likes for us to choose chairs next to a window. There was only one chair next to a window left so we sat there. I usually sleep through most of the treatment. When I woke up, I looked out the window and this is what I saw...

A rainbow in the fountain and a heart in the water next to it. :) Made me smile...really really smile.
Sometimes when you are in a situation that is unpleasant, look around closely and you will still find beauty and maybe even a message from above. You just might have to look for it.

Not So Great

The bad news....Today was a rough day. I had bad chills and body aches. I am also getting nauseated at night. Smooth couple of days are over I guess!
The good news...some new backgrounds are supposed to be delivered tomorrow.

I have been feeling great the past couple of days! It has been wonderful. Today, numbness and tingling set in the tips of my fingers and the tip of my tongue. It is a strange sensation but not painful, a little annoying. Other then that, I am not having any bad side effects the past few days.

First Blood

I had my first blood draw from my power port in my chest today. It went very smoothly. They use a spray to freeze your skin so that it won't hurt so much when they pop into the port. Once they access it, it is a breeze. Hurts a bit when they remove the access but just for a second.

So don't be afraid of a port if you need one. It is better then blood draws in the arm, so much better then getting jabbed in the hand or arm for treatments and they can do it all in the one stick.

I have a new script for anti-nausea med. I am hoping I won't even need it. After the way the last one made me feel...I'd rather be queasy.

I was feeling real well today. I started doing Wii Fit to keep myself exercising during chemo. I recommend it to any chemo patient.

Princess and the Swans

I have not felt up to another self portrait. I should have known I wouldn't keep up with that. I belong behind the camera, not in front of it.

Last week, the day before surgery, I received a new backdrop. I opened it today, grabbed my almost willing daughter and had her pose for me in one of our new vintage dresses.

I photographed her outside under a canopy with the backdrop. Then took the image into photoshop where I did cropping, editing and then painted her and the dress to flow with the artful feel of the backdrop.

My boys put together a hammock/swing for me yesterday. So I can relax in the yard with my dogs. Here is a very unedited ipad2 picture I took today.
I am feeling much better today and was able to enjoy relaxing out in the cool breeze.

Days 3 and 4 - Yuck

Today, day 5 much better. I stopped taking my anti-nausea meds yesterday. My head was in a cloud, my vision was blurry and I was having trouble holding my head up. I could not continue like that. I am risking the nausea, which was my great fear about chemo since I have a very sensitive stomach. So far today, I have been a little queasy but nothing I can't handle.

No self portraits the past couple of days. I will try to do one tomorrow. My steri strips look nasty now. Walking through Walmart I had a horrible fear that some well intentioned goober was going to talk up to me, telling my I have something stuck to my neck and rip it off. YOOOUUUCHHH!!! So I was hiding the strips/incisions the best I could.

Day 1 of Chemo vs. Jane...Jane wins!
It was a long day. We found out there are questions about the most recent biopsy and the node is being sent to Mayo Clinic for them to do a second look at the pathology. 70% of it was still the same cancer but 30% was a larger celled cancer. I am not quite sure what that means for me yet, if anything.,
I had CVP+R, plus a few other drugs that I can't remember the name of. No bad reactions today. I am tired but not terribly tired. I have been told that the steroids I am on for the 5 days will hype me up but some of the other drugs will make me fatigued. We shall see...but today...I win over chemo!
I plan on taking a self portrait every day but no promises. Here is today after chemo.

Surgery - Lymph Node Biopsy and Power Port

Yesterday I had a power port installed into my chest for chemotherapy. I also had two enlarged lymph nodes removed from my neck to have biopsied to make sure we are still battling the same kind of cancer, follicular non-hodgkins lymphoma. This type of cancer is slow growing but can transform into a more aggressive type of non-hodgkins lymphoma.
To update, I was diagnosed over 4 years ago. I have had many rounds of immunotherapy (Rituxan) over these years and now I will be starting chemo (CVP+R) tomorrow.
I know I haven't updated on here much on the past couple of years about the cancer. It is still there and growing. It has gotten to the point I am in discomfort and have trouble sleeping from the pain. Cancerous nodes are protruding out of my neck and CT/PET scans shows it throughout my neck and abdomen.
So yesterday a new journey began with the surgery for the port where they will inject the poison into my blood close to my hearty so it will spread through my body quickly. Tomorrow I will spend all day at the cancer center poisoning my body so that I can get better, at least for a while, since we know this will not cure me of this cancer. I am hoping to get a few good years after this chemo where maybe I wont need any treatment for a while.
So, tomorrow....the fight is on!

A mini session can only be used for for one subject. (child or pet) No backgrounds, no studio set-up and no Victorian themes for mini sessions. Location in Gloucester County,NJ. Further locations outside of Gloucester County, NJ will be considered on individual basis with travel fees.

Wow! It has been so long since I updated my blog.

Much has happened.

The biggest change is that the cancer I have had for 5 years has continued to grow and it is time to enter chemo treatment. I will be having surgery next Wednesday and starting chemo two days later.

Due to the chemo treatments I will be limiting the amount of clients I will be accepting. Also, my pricing structure is changing immediately to decrease my work load on the back end. A new entry will be posted with the new pricing structure.

An interview with Wendi Riggens from Wendi Riggens Photography

Wendi Riggens I met through a photography social group and have met her in person. She is fun, bubbly, energetic and professional. I have much admiration for her and her work!

I thought it would be nice to allow you to get to know her too.

How did you arrive at running your photography business? What path brought you here?

When I was 7, I received a little 110 camera for Christmas, and was always giving my parents rolls of film to develop for me. My dad gave me an old Minolta SLR when I was 12, and I loved figuring out how to work this fully manual piece of equipment to get the look I wanted from my images.
I went off to college, got my bachelor’s degree, and entered the 9-5 world after I graduated. I never felt fulfilled, though, and turned to photography to keep my mind occupied. This quickly turned from hobby to passion to business, and I’ve never looked back! When my full-time job announced earlier this year that I would no longer be needed, I made the crazy decision to make the jump from a little part-time side business, to full-time venture. It’s been a scary journey, but I would rather take the risk and fail, then to never take it and always wonder “what if”. With a little luck and a lot of hard work, I hope to keep the passion and have a fulfilling life-long career with this!

What are you known for in photography? Do you have a specialty? Tell me about it...

I am a wedding photographer, first and foremost. I love the phrase “jack of all trades, master of none”. I really feel that in this creative field, you can’t do everything and be good at it. You have to really find something that you love, that you can throw your heart and soul into, that you can invest yourself in, and really shine at it. For me, that is weddings. There is nothing quite like the expression of true love and joy on a groom’s face the first time he sees his bride, or the tears streaming down the otherwise tough cheeks of her dad as he walks her down the aisle. Being a part of these moments, capturing them in time so that they are never forgotten, is priceless to me.

What do you love about what you do?

The love, the anticipation, the excitement – I love every moment of them! The biggest compliment I receive is when clients view their images and say that they feel like they can hear what is going on, and remember those moments as if it were yesterday.

How would you describe your style?

Natural and organic, with a flair for fun! I like to shoot the wedding and my clients as they really are, and really work hard to get to know them beforehand, so that their wedding images really express their personalities. I like to get creative with posing when the situation calls for it, but my favorite images are the ones where my clients are just being themselves.

Tell me 5 of your favorite photography items that you use?

1-Canon 5DMkII – love this body!

2-Canon EF 70-200 2.8 L IS USM – This is such a wonderful lens for taking those really intimate, emotional shots, without being right in my client’s face. It lets me be a part of the moment without being the moment.

3-Canon EF 24-70 2.8L – This is my main go-to lens for most of my work. It’s versatile, sharp, and handy as can be!

4-Adobe Lightroom 3.0 – Lightroom saved my life and my sanity. I went from processing weddings in 40+ hours, to less than 10. It took me a bit to figure it all out, but once I did, it changed my workflow. I love Lightroom!

5-Shootsac – I first found the Shootsac when they launched it at WPPI in 2007, and am now on my second one! I love that I can have all of my personal stuff (wallet, phone, survival kit), extra stuff (batteries, memory cards), my favorite lenses, and a water bottle on me, without having to lug around an entire camera bag. I always have what I need, and can switch things out as the situation changes. Working with clients, I may have my 24-70, 17-40, and 70-200 lenses in the bag while I shoot with the 85. At receptions, I have an extra flash and pocket wizards, 100 macro, and the flash battery pack on me. I travel lighter and can focus on what I am doing and not what I am carrying!

Tell me 5 things unrelated to photography that you love?

1-Traveling, I love exploring new places, meeting new people, experiencing new things.

2-Pillows! I sleep with a lot of pillows. They have to be soft down-alternatives. I do love feather pillows, but only ones that are broken in!

3-Pink. I wasn’t a little girl who loved pink, but I am an adult woman that does! My favorite outfit to wear to the gym is my pink t-shirt, black capris with a pink waist band, pink sports bra, pink socks, pink Nike’s, pink iPod, and pink earbuds (and sometimes my pink Blackberry). It makes me smile, especially when I am working out!

4-The statues in my bedroom. They are two wooden statues we picked up in Estes Park, CO at a little ethnic store a couple of years ago, and when I lay in bed, I look at them, and they make me smile. They are very simple, one is a man and woman kissing, and the other is a mother holding her child in the air and kissing him. The lines and emotion in the carvings really speak to me.

5-Jodi Picoult novels. Love her!

Where can we find you when you’re not working?

At the gym on the treadmill, my favorite Mexican restaurant Casa Fiesta, or just vegging on the couch with my husband and playing with our son!

Why would someone want to hire you as their photographer?

I have a very specific style, and when someone hires me, it would be for that style, and not just because they need a photographer. I don’t shoot just anything, and am very particular about the clients I work with, so it is important to me to really get to know my clients before our shooting time, so I can really show who they are, and not just what they look like. The people that I get along with best understand that, and understand that there is more to photography than just backdrops and props, and that they are going to be pulled out of their normal photography comfort zone and asked to trust me to really create amazing images for them.

What area/locations do you work in?

I am based in Burlington, Iowa, but love to travel, and have photographed weddings, events, and sessions all over the country, as well as in Mexico. My favorite places to shoot so far have been Chicago and Panama City Beach, Florida, and some day I hope to travel to NYC, San Francisco, and back to Paris!

Do you shoot digital, film or both?

I shoot digitally for all client work, but I do some film work for my own personal projects. My digital work is all photographed using Canon equipment. Film, I shoot with a Holga and an old Pentax K1000.

Any advice you have for someone looking to hire a professional photographer?

Do your research, and really look for someone that you click with, that has a style that you love. Photography is an investment in your memories. Don’t settle for second best, find someone who’s work speaks to you, and that you love, and you will never regret spending any amount of money on your images!

A Butterfly and Her Friend

I went to scope out a new shooting location today and was pleased to see it is in full bloom. While there, I followed around a butterfly that I named Charlette.

She fluttered over to this cluster of flowers and lingered there for a while. I didn't notice Charlette's little friend until I began editing. Do you see him? She must have brought me over there to introduce us.

I will be sharing just a couple of my favorite images in the next couple of days from this seasons Christmas shoots.

But before the season got too busy, my daughter and I took a trip out to Kansas to visit my friend who I wrote about in a recent post Tangled in Barbed Wire.

She is a photographer friend and also a member of my support group Cancer Chicks. She has a studio on her property filled with backdrops and props that unfortunately she can no longer use because of the damage to her arm but she took me out to her studio with my daughter and her granddaughter and she watched as they played dress up and I played photographer. I wish so badly she could have been able to shoot with me. We have never had that chance, to actually shoot together.

Below you will see just two pictures from that day, with more to come in following days. The moon prop was made by her talented husband, Galen.

She and I have tenative plans to make a "bucket list" trip to see some place and person that she really wants to visit. I am asking for prayers and good wishes that this can happen, that she can be well enough to make the trip that she wants to make so badly. And that we will be able to see each other once again, never knowing when our final goodbye will be.

I hope you sleep well tonight my dear friend... as if you were sleeping on the moon...

Tangled in the Barbed Wire

As I walked around the bend in the path I saw her. I saw my friend Chris. She was trapped and tangled up in barbed wire. Fighting this barbed wire, trying to free herself from it, only seems to cause her more pain. Cutting her and damaging her arm so much that it makes fighting to be free from it even harder. The barbed wire gouged her arm so horribly that it now dangles at her side swelling, aching and useless...

I stood there, in shock. Wanting to help so bad, reaching out but she is too far away! I can't reach her! All I can do is talk to her, let her know that I am here...too far away to help her get untangled but close enough that she can hear my voice.

I try and encourage her, I raise my voice to travel to her, hoping she can hear my words of encouragement and love. Hoping that somehow, my words can bring some relief to her pain and encouragement to keep working to get untangled. Wishing so badly there was more I could do.

But my words are all I can offer her. As she grows tired of fighting against it and the pain becomes too overwhelming, I try and tell her, "Chris! Look at the beauty around you. Can you take some comfort in the beauty around you?"
and she replies, "Jane, remember, I used to be like you, a photographer! Taking beautiful pictures, seeing the beauty around me and lifting my camera to capture it all. But this barbed wire has torn my arm up so badly that I can no longer even hold my camera."
I realize there is nothing I can do but just stay with her, letting her know how much I care. So I stay, as the sky changes...I stay...

As night comes and the sun sets...I stay...I will not leave her, I will stay until the sun has gone and I will be there in the morning when the sun rises again, to keep by her side as she battles to get free from her bondage of this barbed wire called stage 4 mestatic breast cancer. I will not leave you, I will stay...

Autumn Walk at Alcyon Park

I went for a walk yesterday alone, just me and my camera, at Alcyon Park in Pitman, NJ.

It was a beautiful day for a nature photo walk. I enjoyed every moment! Fall is my favorite time of year.

The colors are peaking just now in New Jersey. Perfect!

Even pealing tree bark is amazingly beautiful to me.

The squirrels were so active, collecting nuts and such.

This made me smile when I walked up the path and saw it. Thank you for leaving me this drawing, whoever you are!

I am always on a look out for that perfect picture. One that tells a story. One that moves me and touches my soul. So profound that it seems to stop time for me. It is such a beautiful moment when you see it and I did. As I turned the corner on the path I saw it!... and you will too...tomorrow. :)

Camden Waterfront {New Jersey Freelance Photographer}

My son Jacob and I volunteered to photograph the Light the Night Walk for the South Jersey chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society last Saturday evening. We got to Campbell's Field early so we went down to the waterfront to take some pictures.

The Camden Waterfront is a cool place for photography. Then, as I look over the rail, into the the river, this is what I saw.

Storybook Land - Egg Hardbor Twp, NJ

I took my mother and the girls to Storybook Land and we had a great time. This park is perfect for little ones ages 1 - 8. Much older and they probably would feel too old. I am glad I took them this year.
This is the largest coaster they have there. It was just the right size for my 7 year olds.

There are little houses and buildings based on storybooks that the children can explore.

The girls visited the North Pole. The pole is a literal pole of ice. How fun is that!

We ofcourse had to take a picture with Mother Goose, although she looks a bit scary looming so large.

Tyler Arboretum is a beautiful hidden away place in Media, PA. Worth the trip to find.

What a photographer's playground!!...

Don't forget to bring the children, they will enjoy it as much as you!
Running in the meadow maze was a favorite of my children.

The treehouses exhibit was another favorite. The treehouses exhibit is only there until September 27th, 2009 so you still have time to take a trip and enjoy them.

Cancer Chicks PJ party - 2009

As many of you know, I started cancer support group for women with cancer about 18 months ago. We call ourselves the Cancer Chicks. When we had our meet-up in June, our wonderful friend Ashley couldn't make the trip but she was with us in spirit and wished she could be there. She wrote about our trip on her blog and I love what she wrote so much I just have to share the link to her blog post with all of my readers!

A Fork in the Road

I felt a nostalgic type of edit would be fitting for this picture given my thoughts and mood at the time.

This image started out as a fun idea for me. As I was driving my kids home from the zoo today I came to a fork in the road and I saw this image in my head. It is one of the things I love about photography, seeing an image in my mind and making it come to life in a photograph.

As I laid in the road, camera in hand, my son watching for cars...I suddenly saw a symbolic meaning to the image I was creating.

When you come to a fork in the road you are traveling down one road and have to decide which way to go, to the left or to the right. Usually you would think of a fork in the road as the other way around, going down the handle and coming to the prongs where you need to make a choice of which road to take.

In this image, you are beginning at the fork choices and no matter which one you take, it will lead you to the same road in the end.

I thought to myself, how alike this is to my life and the choices I have to make with cancer treatments. (I have a cancer that is incurable) No matter what choice I make for treatment, because there are many different roads I could take in treating and maintaining this cancer, it will eventually lead me to the same road in the end...

Now that I went all sentimental and made this blog post very depressing, I want to be clear...there has been much progress in research and discovery for treatments of FNHL in recent years. No doubt, that will continue and a cure could be found in my lifetime. Until then, I expect the current treatments available will sustain me for a very long time. But these are the types of thoughts people with cancer live with every day. A simple idea, can turn and remind you of the reality of what you are facing.

Despite my ramblings, I hope you smiled when you first saw this "fork in the road" picture! That was my original intention.

Washington Lake Dog Park - Washington Township, NJ

I have decided to do a review of local dog parks. First on my list is Washington Lake Dog Park in Washington Township, NJ.

This is a membership only park. You may register up to 2 dogs. The dogs must have a current rabies vaccination and proof of registration with your township. The cost is $10 per dog if you live in Washington Township and $20 if you live outside of the township.

The pros of this dog park:

It has an area for smaller dogs and one for larger dogs.
There are waste bags for you to clean up your dog's poo, if needed. These have been stocked each time I have been there.
There is a water fountain for humans and dogs outside of the fenced area.
Each fenced area is very large and spacious.

The cons of this dog park:

It is heavily wooded. I witnessed a couple of dogs run into a tree while playing with other dogs.
Because of it being wooded there is more of a chance of ticks.
It is not free.
I think there could be more bench seating provided.
Dogs are not allowed in the rest of the park so you can not go for a walk outside of the dog park section with your dog.

I met this gentleman and his constant companion Patches.

Another dog I met at the dog park seemed to sit on the bench and just wait for her turn to have her picture taken.

Adventure Aquarium - Camden, NJ

I have had a busy summer. One of the things I have done this summer was take a trip to the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, PA. There are 3 floors of exhibits, many of them are hands on. Expect to spend the whole day there and have lunch planned. Either bring lunch with you or purchase at the Cafe.
Here is a glimpse of our day there.

My children climbed up in the old U.S. Airforce plane

Just like I did when I was a child, my kids walked through the giant heart. Yep, I went through again too!

My husband enjoyed pretending he was surfing. You can see a group of people playing virtual soccer and a boy climbing the rock wall behind him.

We had a fun trip there. It is a great place to go, especially on a rainy day when the kids are stuck inside.

Vegetarians Less Likely to Get Cancer

BBC News reported today a study that says "Vegetarians are generally less likely than meat eaters to develop cancer but this does not apply to all forms of the disease, a major study has found."

"The researchers said they found marked differences between meat-eaters and vegetarians in the propensity to cancers of the lymph and the blood, with vegetarians just over half as likely to develop these forms of the disease.
In the case of multiple myeloma, a relatively rare cancer of the bone marrow, vegetarians were 75% less likely to develop the disease than meat-eaters."

Cancer Update - follicular non-hodgkins lymphoma

I went to the oncologist today to find out results of my recent scans and blood tests to see how well I responded to my latest treatment of 4 rounds of Rituxan. I did not receive as good news as I was expecting. The cancer did not respond as well as it did the last time I received this treatment. I was kicked out of the clinical trial because my response wasn't high enough.

The good news is, I did get a decent response just not a great one. Now I have a decision to make about how I want to proceed. I am leaning toward doing maintenance Rituxan. I would receive one infusion every 3 months for the next two years to try and keep the cancer in check where it is now.

A decision will be made by the end of the week.
